How Does Therapy Work?
1. Taking the First Step
Deciding to start therapy can feel overwhelming, especially if it's new to you.
You might wonder if your problems are "big enough" or worry about what to expect.
But therapy is a powerful, supportive process that has helped countless people gain clarity, cope with challenges, and make meaningful changes.
There's no right or wrong reason to seek therapy - if something is affecting your well-being, talking to a professional can help. Whether you're feeling stuck, over-whelmed, or just need a space to process your thoughts, your therapist is here to support you.
2. What to Expect from Your Therapist
Your therapist will provide a safe, non-judgemental space where you can talk openly. She will ask thoughtful questions to understand your situation, help you explore your concerns, and guide you towards positive change.
You don't need to have all the answers before starting therapy. Some people come in with a clear goal, while others simply know they're struggling but aren't sure why.
Either way, that's okay - your therapist will work with you to help you gain clarity and move forward at a pace that feels right for you.
3. A Comfortable & Supportive Space
Many clients say they feel at ease from the very first session. Therapy should feel like a safe space where you can be open without fear of judgement.
If you choose in-person sessions, the therapy room is designed to be private and welcoming to put you at ease and feel comfortable.
If you choose online sessions, you can join from the comfort of your own home. You’ll be sent a Zoom link after booking, and your therapist will be ready to greet you when you log in.
Therapy is most effective when you feel comfortable, so you’ll be encouraged to be open about what works best for you.
4. Therapy is a Two-Way Process
Therapy isn't just about talking —it's a collaborative process. Your therapist will work with you, offering insights, tools, and strategies tailored to your needs. Some sessions might focus on talking through your thoughts and emotions, while others may involve learning practical coping techniques.
Therapy is not about giving advice or telling you what to do. Instead, your therapist will help you explore options, challenge unhelpful thinking patterns, and find solutions that feel right for you.
The more open and engaged you are, the more you'll get from the process — but there's no pressure to have everything figured out straight away. Therapy is a journey, and your therapist will be with you every step of the way.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q) Where are you based?
At Maple Wellness, Epps Building, Bridge Road, Ashford, Kent. (Appointment only)
Q) How do I know which type of therapy I need?
Please don't worry about choosing the 'right' type of therapy before booking.
Your therapist is trained in a wide range of approaches and will tailor their techniques to suit your specific needs. Whether you need support processing emotions, developing coping strategies, or working through specific challenges, your therapist will guide you using the most effective methods for your situation.
Q) Can I speak to the therapist before booking to see if they're the right for me?
We understand that finding the right therapist is important, and you want to feel confident before booking. You will be offered a free introductory 15min call with Julia before booking.
If, after your first session, you feel that another therapist may be a better fit, Julia is more than happy to help you arrange a change. Our priority is making sure you receive the right support in a way that feels comfortable for you.
Q) What is the difference between Counselling & Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?
Counselling is a talking therapy that helps you explore your thoughts and feelings in a safe, supportive space. It focuses on helping you process emotions, gain understanding, and find the best way forward.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is more structured and solution-focused. While it acknowledges past experiences, it concentrates on developing practical tools and strategies to help you change unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours.
Q) Are all your therapists fully qualified and experienced?
Yes. Julia is fully qualified, highly experienced, and aligned with the National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society (NCPS), a professional accrediting body.
Q) What can I expect in my first session?
You'll meet your therapist, discuss your concerns, and talk about what you hope to achieve. Your therapist will also answer any questions you may have.
Q) How does online counselling work?
Online sessions take place over Zoom. Once you book and pay, you'll receive a confirmation email with a Zoom link - just click it a few minutes before your session, and your therapist will be there waiting.
Q) How many sessions will I need?
It depends on your situation and goals. Some people find a few sessions helpful, while others might feel they need longer-term support. Your therapist will give you an idea of what might be helpful after your first session. Rest assured, my goal is to help you get to where you want to be as quickly as possible, not to keep you in therapy unnecessarily.
Q) Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?
Yes! Many clients prefer online therapy because it's so convenient and private. You also don't have to worry about travelling time. Therapists are skilled in making online sessions just as effective as in-person ones.
Q) How often should I book sessions, and can I book a block of sessions?
It is recommended that you start with weekly sessions for the first few weeks to build momentum. After that, you can decide what works best for you.
I don't offer block bookings, as I don't believe in tying clients into a set number of sessions. Instead, after your first session, you can choose to book further sessions directly with your therapist.
Q) Am I tied to the same appointment time each week?
Yes, because I need to book the room. If this is difficult, I can check availability with the shared rooms I hire. After each session, you can discuss with your therapist what days/times work best for you.
Q) Do you offer free sessions or reduced rates for people on a low income?
No, this is a private counselling service and so I do not offer free or discounted sessions.
Q) Can I pay through my health insurance?
I don't work directly with insurance companies. However, we can provide an invoice or receipt that you may be able to claim back from your provider.
Q) How do I book a session?
Booking is simple— just visit our website and click the 'Book Online Now' button. You'll be able to choose a time that suits you.
Q) How do I pay for my session?
Payment is made securely online via Bank Transfer prior to each session.
You'll receive a full confirmation once your payment is complete.
